Black Seeds

The Qur’an (A’raf 57-58) says which means:

“And it is He Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings going before His Mercy. Till when they have carried heavy laden clouds, We drive them to a land that is dead, then We cause water to descend thereon. Then We produce every kind of fruit therewith. Similarly, We shall raise up the dead, so that you may remember or take heed. The vegetation of a good land comes forth by the Permission of its Rabb.”

And in Surah Hijr Ayah 19:

“And the earth We have spread out and have placed therein firm mountains and caused to grow therein all kinds of things in due proportion.”

Hadith: Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him):

I heard Allah’s Messenger (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) saying, “There is healing in black seeds for all diseases except death.”(See Bukhari book of medicine)

The Qur’an says in Surah Jathiyah Ayah 2-3 which means:

“The revelation of the book is from Allah the All-Mighty the All-Wise. Verily, in the heavens and the earth are signs for the believers.”
And in Surah Baqarah Ayah 20: “Certainly Allah has power over all things.”

Also in Surah Mu’minun Ayah 80: “And it is He (Allah) who gives life and causes death”

And in Surah Shu’ara Ayah 80: “And when I am ill, It is He who cures me.”

Black seeds (habbah sawdaa) or (nigella sativa) are called by different names, black cumin, Indian cumin or coriander seeds, but these are incorrect. The Hadith states (“حبه” habbah) which means seed and (“سودى” sawdaa) which means black.

Is it a cure for every disease? The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said so.

For Allah states in the Qur’an in Ayah 2-4 in Surah Najim which means:

“Your companion (the Prophet) has neither gone astray nor has he erred. Nor does he speak of desire. It is only revelation revealed”
Black seeds is said to remove leucoderma patches (white spots), clear blockages, dry up soggy stomach, increase the flow of urine, milk and menses, kill intestinal worms, cure colds, relieve shortness of breath, removes wind, relieve headaches, is good for treating palsies, apoplexy (stroke), amnesia and vertigo, helps in treating bronchitis, aids digestion, relieves colic, soothes whooping cough, asthma and bronchial respiratory complaints, relieves nasal congestion, conjunctivitis and haemorrhoids, helps balance uric acid in blood to relieve gout, dissolves gallstones and kidney stones, heals sores, extracts pus, relieves toothaches and can be used as an insect repellent.

The pure oil should not be taken undiluted as it can cause stomach cramps or irritate the digestive system. One should balance it out with something else to counteract this effect.
Black seeds have been used for over two thousand years in one form or another as an herbal medicine.

Putting black seed powder in a cloth and inhaling it regularly reduces the effects of colds, mixing the powder with olive oil helps remove phlegm and relieves nasal congestion (I used 1/3 tsp powder to ½ tbsp. olive oil three drops in each nostril), adding the seeds to ones daily intake balances uric acid in the blood and helps gout ( the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) is said to have eaten seven seeds a day), a strong tea made with crushed seeds sweetened with honey helps dissolve gallstones, kidney stones and if taken over a few days it increases urine, menses and milk production.

(Suggestion: boil one and a half cups water and one teaspoon of powder until it reduces to three fourth of a cup add two tablespoons of honey and drink warm), making a paste of the powder boiled with vinegar and spreading it over the stomach cures ringworms, cooking the seeds in vinegar and rinsing the mouth with it helps the gums and relieves toothache, inhaling the oil of black seeds can help against facial paralysis, black seeds and warm milk cured a brother of an ulcer
